Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task in her position as the White House's strategist for communications. The White House strategic communications adviser must deal with multiple legal disputes that could disrupt the messaging policy of the administration along with Cabinet secretaries involved in their own scandals. Schlapp has kept her eye at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation with White House staff from the political and legislative affairs team and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. Her focus has been on issues like the safety of schools, opioids, and infrastructure, as well as trade. As of now the director does not interact much with journalists. She received a lot of press attention after she was announced as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. The battle has been brutal. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh another candidate for the position started fighting in the media. Following The Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp said she called Sayegh to show a relationship with her.
